Description
Villa Romàntica:The name given to this outstanding one of a kind landmark fits like a glove by any given standard. The word “Villa” originated during the Roman times describing their spacious vacation homes located in a natural setting away from urban centers. The name “Romàntica” is also a true description of how one feels while living at this villa. The privacy of its well chosen location, the lighting, the intimacy and simple elegance of its original design, the classical Italian / Mediterranean style, and the unbelievable villa’s site sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and the evergreen Jungle inspires romance even to the non-romantic visitors.

The Villa Location/Views: The owners embarked on a decade long world-wide search for an idyllic location to build their dream villa. It was found in 1984 minutes from Costa Rica’s best beach; the entire 6 hectares (14.6 acres) estate has been set aside by its owners as private tropical jungle reserve. Notwithstanding its proximity to the beautiful beach, the villa is totally isolated (5kms south of the beach on a dead-end road). The villa overlooks the entire estate below due to its 114 meter elevation (373’). Beyond that it overlooks a 4 kilometer stretch of rugged and wild coastline often compared to the one of Carmel California. The coastline shelters grottos, 2 inlet beaches, blowhole, waterfall and a lagoon. Beyond the coastline you see a 180 degree + view of the ever-changing Pacific Ocean where the far horizon bends gently with the curvature of our planet. The existing spectacular views the villa is privileged with will never be obstructed due to its elevation and the steep slope of the valley below. In real estate they say location is everything and the villa’s location is unparallel for its scenic beauty. The villa being perched so high and so close to the ocean provides for the most dramatic views imaginable. The property goes up to a 180 meters elevation (588’) from where many of Guanacaste’s beaches can be seen.

The Layout of the Villa: The villa is built on a ridge parallel to the ocean spanning about 200 feet in length on a three level terraced plan. The layout is an open concept design for the tropical climate of approximately 5,000 square feet of covered living space plus 3,000 square feet of terraces. This terraced linear layout provides about 300’ linear feet of terrace balustrades parallel to the sea from where to lean over and enjoy the unbelievable ocean views all around the villa. The main floor of the villa is built on one level without a single step. The service wing is separated by the 27’ high living room from the 3 bedroom wing. Baths : 3+2 powder rooms in the main villa. From the open-concept living room the infinity edge swimming pool can be admired as it dissolves into deep-blue Pacific Ocean. The BBQ area is isolated in the back of the villa separated by its formal gardens. The guest apartment is tucked in below the villa on the first level for total privacy. The open concept billiard room is surrounded by hibiscus hedges and is located on the top level amid the citrus grove and palm trees. A brand new 400 square foot greenhouse/nursery is also nestled in the citrus grove. In this vicinity there is a separate office with its own bathroom.

The Villa Construction: The construction of the villa began in 2002 and was completed in 2005 but improvements are still in progress.

Masonry structure: The imposing structure is of solid reinforced concrete wall and is built beyond present Costa Rican anti-seismic building code. Every now hidden reinforced detail was photographed prior to pouring for future reference.

Metals: All metals are of non-corrosive nature. Aluminum was used for all outdoor light fixtures, railings, windows, doors, outdoor furniture. High grade stainless steel metal was universally used for all fasteners (nails, bolts, nuts) and all door hardware.

Woods: All woods used in this construction are of durable precious woods. All structural beams for the roof were imported “Almendro” from Nicaragua. Wood for ceiling and doors are of Pacific Cedar. Wood for kitchen cabinets and all custom designed furniture were fabricated with precious woods of “Cenizaro”.

Imported Materials: All ceramic for the villa was imported from Italy, granite from Brazil, coral stone from Colombia, electrical components from Canada, stainless steel fasteners and hardware from USA.

Quality of workmanship: The owners were very demanding on the workmanship as it can be admired throughout the villa. The construction had one of the best carpenters around so that wood joints were of tight tolerance. The owners went to get the best ceramic installer and painter in the region. The owner fabricated and installed all the aluminum windows with less that 1/4” opening tolerances to mention a few.

The Authenticity in Style: The owners devoted a lot of time and effort to customize details to make villa style an authentic classical Italian - Mediterranean Villa and here are only a few examples: The signature for the Villa Romàntica is without any doubt its 29 custom-designed Tuscan columns complimented with Venetian balustrades. The white washed walls with the red terracotta tile roof with short overhang is a typical Mediterranean feature. The swimming pool was designed to compliment the villa and is in the classical Roman style. The villa has custom designed street names in many corners of the construction so that one gets the feeling of being in a tiny Italian village. Other elements to accentuate style authenticity is the beautiful Pergola, the Italian fountain, the authentic Italian wood burning oven, French aluminum-cast balustrades and the formal gardens to mention a few.

The Climate: The villa is situated in a dry tropical ocean front location sought by all of us who try to escape the cold climates. Well this is the place, since Costa Rica has been named as to have the world’s best climate by National Geographic, no heaters or air conditioners will ever be needed here. The high elevation of the villa draws ocean and mountain breezes that make relaxing in the shade or sleeping at night very comfortable indeed. Temperatures are so incredibly reliable that one can practically live naked indoor or outdoor, night and day in the dry or wet season. That is pretty hard to beat, even the pool temperature rarely descend below 29 degrees Celsius.

Environment: Our planet is under tremendous stress by what humankind has placed in the name of progress and the environment is more and more in the news and this we believe is only the beginning. Pollution, such as in water, air, noise, smog, common sight in the cities and suburbia is totally non existent here. The water we drink comes from a well dug in a 50’ deep rock and tested to be better than bottled water. The air we breathe could not be better since the villa is amidst the very lungs of our planet (evergreen jungle). Not a chimney within hundreds of miles, no car traffic since the villa is on a dead-end road, no noise except the rhythm of the surf, the call of monkeys and parrots, the soothing balmy breeze and the chirping of countless species of birds. Forgot to mention that sometimes the owners we are awaken by the Manta Rays, Dolphins, and Whales performing summersaults along the shore line. The estate is alive with flora and fauna; more so since the owners have secured the entire 6 hectares estate as a jungle reserve. The location is neither too humid nor too dry, so vegetation is present year-round. The environment where the villa has been chosen to be built is a true pristine tropical paradise and all was done to preserve it that way during the construction of the villa and while living there. A habitat that is alive with animals, flowers, fruits and vegetation is a true sign that the place is also a healthy place to live for us humans.

In the spotlight: Although the villa has just been completed, its design has already been praised by world- renowned architects and Hollywood personalities that have walked through its doors. The common expressions of visitors describing the villa is; “Spectacular!”, “Grand!”, “Stunning!”, “A Dream!”, “A Masterpiece”, “this is Art, not construction”. The villa has won the 2005 International Silver Medal Award of Excellence for its impressive infinity edge Roman pool design. The company that built the pool used this award event to showcase the pool with billboards around the capital. The villa was featured in the Costa Rican Architectural Magazine, March 2008 issue of “Estilos y Casas and selected among the best ocean villas of Costa Rica as the front cover of the magazine. The villa was selected as “House of the week” in the February 22nd 2008 edition of Wall Street Journal.
